Sinusitis and its complications
Sinusitis is one among the top 10 medical conditions. Sinusitis is common like cold, cough and runny nose and in most cases it is just a temporary condition which gets away with simple sinusitis treatment. But in rare cases it leads to many complications.
The space found between the bones of the face is known as sinuses where air passes and also fluid called mucus settles in the nose. Sinusitis occurs when the inner lining of the sinuses become swollen and gets enlarged.
Eye socket infection: This infection which is also known as orbital infection causes swelling, loosens and drops the eyelid, though it is a rare medical condition it is one of the severe complications of ethmoid sinusitis. In this case, there will be no movement in the eyes and there will be more pressure on the optic nerve and intense pressure may also result in loss of vision. Fever along with severe illness is a common symptom in this kind of infection.
Osteomyelitis: This condition occurs when the forehead and other facial bones are infected. The patients who suffer from this ailment will have fever, severe headache and swelling over the facial bones and this is called as Pott’s puffy tumor.
Infection in the brain: Brain infection is considered as the most life threatening complication caused due to frontal and sphenoid sinusitis and is occurs when the anaerobic bacterial infection spreads to the brain through the bones or blood vessels.
Blood clot: Clots in the blood is another dangerous condition due to frontal or ethmoid sinusitis Infection. In case the blood clot appears in the facial sinus area, the symptoms are more or less similar to orbital infection. Further, the pupil will become dilated and fixed. Initially the symptoms are seen in one side of the head; however, gradually it passes to the other part of the head.
Fatigue, intolerable pain and other symptoms of sinusitis affects an individual daily life very badly. Studies reveal that patients with sinusitis in an average miss 4 to 5 working days in a year.
